Book Review: Jane of Austin by Hillary Manton Lodge

Jane of Austin is a modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility. Having only read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (guilty as charged!), this book was a novel story for me, having nothing to compare it with. To be honest, what encouraged me to pick up the book was the eye-catching and pleasant cover.

The story is about the Woodward sisters who are compelled to become independent at a young age. Jane is passionate about tea and Celia has a business mind. Together, they make a living running a cozy tea shop in San Francisco whilst bringing up their baby sister Margot. Unfortunately, when news of their father's business scandal is spread, they are forced to relocate. Celia projects a more eager attitude towards the move as compared to Jane, who is hesitant and apprehensive.

The girls choose Austin,Texas as their new residence to start afresh. Their mother's relatives who live there welcome the girls with open arms and thus begins their new journey. What follows is a light but relate-able read of their struggles in a new setup. The reader is taken along their roller-coaster of emotions, heartbreak, hurdles, relationships and more. The author introduces a mix of characters that have their separate interesting backgrounds that definitely add spice to the novel's story.
What I liked most about this book was the the writing style. The author did a good job with flow of events. It wasn't high-paced nor monotonous- a good balance in my opinion. The tea related quotes at the beginning of chapters and recipes at the end were an interesting touch.

If you're looking for a light, summer chick-lit, this one should be on your list!
