Entertainment Catastrophes of 2016 (that we hope won't repeat in 2017)

A list of entertainment sector disasters that happened in 2016 around the world!

Suffices to say, 2016 has been a rather melancholic year (in all aspects) and I hope and pray that 2017 brings joy and peace around the world. We were confronted with multiple entertainment sector disasters which we wish will NOT repeat in 2017. I have compiled a list of some of these disasters that personally made me squirm!

1. Movies

Starting with the local scenario, whilst audiences have sworn that “Dobara Phir Se” and “Lahore Se Agay” have both been sheer waste of time, the masterpiece “Mah-e-Mir” has to be my worst nightmare! I remember how difficult it was to sit through the whole thing.. People were scarred for days trying to grasp the abstract cinematography, sets and dialogues.

Hollywood’s Zoolander 2 and Dirty Grandpa were both categorized as “trying too hard”. Robert De Niro would have been better off not starring in this revolting film.

Bollywood, also, gave us some memorable flops. Film-makers’ sudden interest in making VERY bold films is backfiring. Movies like Mastizaade, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and even Befikre (honest review coming up soon) have too much (unnecessary) adult content which the subcontinent’s majority audience is dejecting. Tasteful and sophisticated cinema was rare this year.

Katrina Kaif’s transformation made her look sizzling hot in “Baar Baar Dekho”; unfortunately both her films (second being Fitoor) were a box office flop. As much as Katy holds a special place in my heart (I think she's gorgeous and my best friend and I actually bonded over our mutual love for her all those many years ago), maybe it’s time for her to consider a change?

Last, but by far not the least, “Sanam Teri Kasam” is a work of art (all pun intended). Mawra Hocane may have made many fans and friends across the border but her continuous weeping performance in this film was deplorable. First of all, the film itself felt like a fast forward summary of a Star Plus soap. Secondly, everything else in the movie including the dialogues, the male lead’s urge to wear shrunken shirts, the instant fraaaandships and falling in love and the songs made NO SENSE. This song, however, is #myjam #bae:

2. Disappointing Revivals

Two hit shows from the past came back this year with very hyped revivals following promising trailers and publicity. Unfortunately for their fans, both shows, namely Fuller House and Gilmore Girls, failed to recreate the magic. I haven't seen Fuller House so I am basing this on reviews I have read. Gilmore Girls, however, was absolutely heartbreaking. It did NOT live up to my expectations BY FAR. Rory Gilmore, in fact, has been unanimously voted as one of the worst TV characters this year!

3. Music

We sympathize with reputable stars who experiment to give something new but the outcome turns out to be horrendous. This was the case this year with Britney Spears’ “Private Show”, Jacob Sartorius’ “Sweatshirt” and Meghan Trainor’s “No” which make our ears plead for mercy!

Oh but how can one forget the internet sensation, Tahir Shah? Mankind's Angel has to be one of the most cringe-worthy videos on the internet in today's world.

4. Fashion Disasters

This list is never ending really. I have shortlisted a few for your entertainment:

  • Sofia Vergara’s hairstyle at the Emmy’s killed the actress’s oomph

  • Jared Leto at the Suicide Squad Premiere

  • Sobia Nazir’s formal collection at the Fashion Pakistan Week.. Faux fur? Faux pas please!

  • Kosem Sultan Costumery by Shameel Ansari and Amir Adnan at the FPW

  • Vidya Balan’s never ending love for absurd sarees

  • Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez at the 18th Mumbai Film Festival. Fashion Icons? Ergh....

5. DYOT Music Video

This video of young Pakistani girls breaking into a dance routine in the middle of Anarkali Bazaar in Old Lahore launched as a DYOT (Do Your Own Thing) movement to address harassment is FAR from women empowerment in my opinion. Why can't these social stigmas be addressed in a more intellectual/sophisticated manner?

6. #AnushMuneeb

Anyone who doesn’t know about this wedding hashtag has seriously missed out on the most extravagant wedding of all times. As per my calculation,  this couple hosted 14 (or more) events for their wedding, some of which took place in Turkey. Everything from clothes to décor was over the top and I seriously hope that no one gets inspired to replicate this *cough* overdone *cough* wedding in 2017.

The following doesn't fall under the entertainment banner but I feel needs to be mentioned in this list of disasters:

7. Politics

Even though I am not into current affairs (don't judge) but the world was shook twice by the global political realm this year. First came ‘Brexit’ which still makes no sense to many; followed by Trump being elected as the next US President. What baffled me the most was how Simpsons predicted all this 15 years ago! Oh and let’s not forget our local dhandli king: Imran Khan... and Bhutto Junior's monotonous and shrilly speeches...

While there were many other things that made us put our glasses on to reread or even fall off our chairs in shock, let’s end this list here. If there is anything that you feel should be included in this post, please comment below!
