Theatrical Play Review: Aapka Matlooba Number

I was invited to the Media Night of the new play in town: Aap Ka Matlooba Number... Doosri Line Per Masroof Hai. The play is being held at the Aiwan-e-Quaid Auditorium in F-9, Islamabad.

As the name suggests, the play is a light comedy based on the stereotypical issues (read: pyar, ishq aur muhabbat kay tamashay) that millennials of today face.

Set in a coffee house (major Friends and Central Perk vibes), the audience witnesses the extensive planning that Taimur and his friends go through to aid Taimur in marrying the love of his life along with tackling the numerous hurdles they face.

To be honest, the story line is cliched (a love triangle, some goofy friends and predictable twists -- a  mixture of several Booywood flicks) BUT one is still hooked till the end. The actors of Aapka Matlooba Number did a tremendous job by keeping their audience engaged and entertained. The auditorium echoed with generous applause and hearty laughter after some extremely well delivered dialogues and well executed acts.

I am very critical when it comes to our local industry, be it films or theater; I am easily disappointed when our actors try too hard. Aapka Matlooba Number, however, has a good chunk of talented actors; my favourites being Salmaan Shaukat as Yasir, Ommar Abdullah as Babur, Moid Rajpoot as the Waiter and Xenia Abid as Saiqa (with her teddy). In my opinion, these actors were on point with everything. Their dialogue delivery was brilliant, they were adequately dramatic and did justice to their silly characters, their body language (especially the Waiter Rafiq's) was apt. I chuckled quite a few times.

What I liked the most about the play was how it didn't have 'cheap' humour. There were some punch lines which did seem forced but they didn't make me cringe. Two things that I would like to point out to the cast and crew are: the scene changing pauses were a little too long and some scenes (like the one between the two girls) can easily be cut out. A little editing will ensure that the play doesn't feel too dragged.

I would like to give the team ten on ten points for their effort and wish them good luck for future shows!

  1. I agree that most films now-a-days have the same theme and those cringe worthy dialogues ! But I am glad you liked the play Our film industry should explore more topics rather than the prevalent one.
